Tyre Notations
Tyre notations in this Avon motorcycle tyres section of our website fall into three distinct categories according to their construction type.
Crossply Tyres
Crossply tyres are denoted by the inclusion of a dash within the notation. E.G. 230/60H15 86H.
Bias Belted Tyres
Bias Belted tyres are denoted by the inclusion of the letter "B" within the notation. E.G. 140/90B16 77H.
Radial Tyres
Radial tyres are denoted by the inclusion of a letter "R" withon the notation. E.G. 120/70R17 73W.
In all cases, the speed rating is incorporated within the speed and load index follow the notation.
NOTE: The introduction of European Regulations ECE R75 has resulted in a more precise expression of speed indices. For example, almost all "Z-rated" tyres now carry a "W" within the load speed markings. Whereas the "Z" indicates a tyre capacity to run over 240kph, the letter "W" indicates that it is capable of running ay 270kmp or higher if the speed and load index is enclosed in brackets.
Radial Versus Bias
While running a bias ply front tyre and a radial rear tyre can be acceptable in certain applications, you should never run a radial front and a bias rear as this can create an instability issue.
Avon Motorcycle Tyres is not responsible for abnormal wear due to suspension modifications and/or improper maintance.
